The
National School Lunch Program was established in 1946 under the National
School Lunch Act. It provided that schools serve not only healthy meals
but also safe, culturally appropriate meals that encourage students to
make healthy selections. To date the program has served 183 million
lunches across the United States and currently 27 million students
participate in the school lunch program. At Crews, we serve over 1200
lunches most days, as well as breakfast to over 200 students.
One
of our goals at Crews is to encourage our students-YOU- to make good,
healthy choices. Our program is set up to meet your nutritional needs
while you are away from home. The nutrition goals are based on the
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). Breakfast meets ¼ of the RDA
while lunch meets 1/3 of the RDA for protein, vitamin A, vitamin C,
iron, calcium and calories for children. The meals served are based on
the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which indicate that no more than
30 percent of calories should come from fat and less than 10 percent
from saturated fat. All food served is also moderate in sodium and
sugar.
