ABOUT THE ACCMS BANDS The Band Program at Alton C. Crews Middle School has gained a statewide reputation for excellence in our first 11 years. The Concert Bands and Jazz band have achieved superior and excellent ratings at District Performance Evaluations and the Concert Bands have performed for Magic Music Days at Walt Disney World on six occasions. The Eighth Grade Band has also performed as part of the Music Educators Leadership Institute at Georgia Sate University for a Festival of Music by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Michael Colgrass and the 17th Annual University of Georgia Middle School Festival. Band students from Crews have received numerous honors including All-State Band membership (22), District Band membership (over 120), as well as invitations and scholarships to summer music camps. Graduates from the ACCMS bands move on to become members of the highly regarded and award winning Brookwood High School Bronco Marching and Concert Bands. Band begins in the sixth grade. Students who are remotely interested in playing a musical instrument are encouraged to take this class. Students are then exposed to basic music notation and reading, as well as trying out on as many instruments as possible to find just the right one. Band is an academic/performance class with a spiral curriculum that begins in sixth grade and continues throughout high school. Sixth grade classes are divided into brass and woodwind families. Seventh grade bands are divided into two fully instrumented groups and continue building on the foundation established in beginning band. Eighth grade bands are more performance oriented while continuing to develop, and refine basic musical concepts. Band students are given many opportunities for musical growth through small ensemble participation, District and All-State Band auditions and a Jazz Band, which meets once a week before school. Students are also encouraged to take private lessons on their chosen instrument.
Band Director Frank Folds has been teaching for 25 years. This is his fourteenth year in Gwinnett County. He has taught previously at Five Forks Middle School and in South Georgia at Camden Middle School and Jeff Davis High School. Mr. Folds holds Bachelors, Masters and Educational Specialist degrees from the University of Georgia where he served as Graduate Assistant and Band Captain. He is married to the former Cheri Jones of Owensboro, Kentucky. They have four children, Elliott (14), Ansley (10) and eight year old twins, Emily and Abby. Mr. Folds has served the Georgia Music Educators Association as a district officer, district event organizer, All-State Band Organizer as well as State Band Division Chairman and State Vice-president for All-State. He has also served on the Crews Middle School Executive Council and as orchestra director for W. R. Cannon United Methodist Church. Mr. Folds currently serves Chairman of the Phi Beta Mu Georgia Band Masters Hall of Fame and Treasurer of the Tara Winds Scholarship Foundation. In 2005 and 2006 he was selected for recognition in Who’s Who Among American Teachers and Who’s Who in America and in 2007 received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association.
